MiniCAT CT SCAN OF THE SINUSES

Until recently, a patient who required a CT scan of the sinuses, temporal bones or skull bases had to travel to an imaging center or hospital, lie down in a confining full-body CT scanner, hyperextend the neck, and remain still while medical technicians worked around them. For patients who are claustrophobic or timid, it could be a difficult experience. This has led to low patient return rate.

We are pleased to let you know that we have added a Xoran MiniCAT to our practice and are using it with great success. It is the first-ever compact CT scanner created specifically for in-office use. Our practice is one of the first and only in this area to have this technology

With this new CT scanner, the patient sits comfortably upright in an open design, minimizing claustrophobia. A scan takes only 10 or 20 seconds, depending on the protocol selected. A high-resolution, digitally versatile CT image is then immediately available on our computer monitor. The doctor can then review the results with you right then and there and set up a treatment plan. This instant, on-site CT scanner will accelerate diagnosis and treatment.

Low Radiation Levels

Patients are also comforted to learn that this new technology has a significantly lower radiation dose than full-body CT scanners. For comparison look at the adjacent chart and you can see that the amount of radiation for this in-office scanner is one tenth of the amount of radiation obtained from a regular hospital or radiation center CT center scanner.

To put this in perspective, below is a chart of the approximate effective dose for a variety of medical imaging procedures and their comparison to average background radiation. As shown, the MiniCat poses an extremely minimal amount of radiation exposure to patients and is equivalent to just two chest x-rays – while giving doctors high resolution images to counsel their patients about their diagnosis that can lead to quicker implementation of treatment regimens.
